Route: Mevagissey to Looe Name: Katherine Evans Walked on: 1st September 2023

Planning and booking for your walk with Encounter Walking Holidays

"All queries answered promptly and very helpful. Sufficient reminders of 'what and when'."

Encounter Walking Holidays Website

"Website helped me locate a suitable walk."

Your Walking Routes

"We travelled from London to Cornwall a day earlier than planned due to a train strike. The upside was two nights in Mevagissey at the same hotel booked originally. I would highly recommend two nights here as it allowed as to do an orientation walk to the delightful Gorran Haven the first day (in the opposite direction). The last day was certainly challenging - but we liked being able to say 'we made it!' "

Walking notes, maps, guidebooks and itinerary

"Very comprehensive. We didn't really use the detailed map book but it was nice to look at after the walk. The guidebook was the most useful (I copied pages so I didn't have to put the whole book in my luggage). Perhaps provide a pdf of the relevant pages for the walk planned? We were not very successful in finding a good cream tea....the one's listed were too early in the day (relative to the time we started walking). Great pastie in Gorran Haven though! I used one walking pole to take some weight off the opposite leg (per physio recommendation). It might be worth noting that the tracks are very narrow at times (vegetation high on either side) and use of a pole or two becomes difficult. Minor issue in the scheme of things. The walking instructions to Eden Project on our rest day were a little hard to follow at various points. There was one track where we were not sure where we had to turn off. Google helped! The return bus was easy and my son went back to the hotel on a Beryl bike."

Luggage transfers

"No issues. Our luggage was always in the right place at the right time."

Accommodation

"It was what I expected and a bit more. The location of Mevaggissey Bay hotel was stunning. Coffee at breakfast was lukewarm (made but not kept warm/hot). Rashleigh Arms room was lovely but a bit noisy on a Saturday night. Fortunately I was tired and slept well anyway. A great central location though. The staff at Rashleigh arms were so friendly and everything supplied was 'generous'. My son had a great steak one night (I wish I had too). "

Overall experience

"This was the best choice for us as 'first timers' on the SW Coast Track. It was great to be able to focus on the walk and have the other arrangements sorted for us. I am so glad I chose Cornwall over other destinations and to do this walk at this time in my (older) life. It was very special to spend time with my son and for us to enjoy the experience together. Thank you! While I ticked 'Yes' for Question 8, I have many other places to visit first...to be honest with you. I could be lured back if my friends (who have seen my photos on FB) encourage me."

Route: Plymouth to Exmouth Name: Barry Michael Crossley Walked on: 28th August 2023

Planning and booking for your walk with Encounter Walking Holidays

"Good communication with the team and timescales for finances and received very full information in the final pack. Damon helped clarify the details of cross the Erme at low tide."

Encounter Walking Holidays Website

"Very clear and able to cross check info with the SW coastal path website too."

Your Walking Routes

"Fantastic stretch of coastline, varied and enjoyable, combination of quite remote and then several towns/resorts. Overall more strenuous than expected, and deadlines with ferries added pressure, so days varied in length. Though used to coastal walking, needed a break by time reached Brixham."

Walking notes, maps, guidebooks and itinerary

"Used Traiblazer a lot and found that timings were accurate if kept pace up, but never arrived anywhere 'early'. Didn't use A-Z, bought Harveys instead because it is more waterproof. Didn't like your notes about getting to Church House Inn at Stokenham. After a long day's walk it was a considerable extra stretch to walk all that way uphill. I think you could emphasise that bus should be seriously considered both ways. That's what I did!"

Luggage transfers

"No issues at all."

Accommodation

"Overall standard very good, particularly room sizes (hate box rooms!) Waverley was only traditional private residence B&B, would have liked 1 or 2 more but appreciate probably not available. Room in Royal Castle in Dartmouth was on 3rd floor and in middle of building so had to keep curtain drawn one side and no air to outside."

Overall experience

"Finished walk at Brixham and did rest by bus and train! My wife wasn't well towards the end of the walk, so decided to return home a day early. Wanted to skip Babbaconbe and stay in Exmouth a night early and pick up car to return home but Royal Beacon couldn't oblige so had to go to Exmouth to pick up car, return to Babbacombe and drive home from there. So a combination of factors came into play. I thought beforehand I could manage whole stretch in 8 days but realised that I am starting to slow down at 73! And was troubled by a blister. In future I would arrange shorter days so there is a lot more time to relax along the way. But accommodation on that stretch is a problem in places."

Route: South West Coastal Path - Lyme Regis to Poole Name: Carl Soderbergh Walked on: 12th August 2023

Planning and booking for your walk with Encounter Walking Holidays

"Your team are always so prompt, helpful and responsive to any requests. I especially appreciate the recommendations you make, for instance for rest days. It is also very useful that you provide alternative choices for accommodation, so that one can perhaps choose one or two upgrades - if one likes. "

Encounter Walking Holidays Website

"Provides a very useful sense of the itinerary so that one can make informed choices, for instance about rest days or optional stretches (in this case around Portland Bill). "

Your Walking Routes

"A wonderful range of options with a clear sense that your team know each of the routes well. I especially appreciated how you organised the wonderful Angela, the taxi driver, to take me to Worth Matravers. on the two last mornings. Really great to be able to walk back to Lulworth and not feel that I had to rush to meet a taxi. "

Walking notes, maps, guidebooks and itinerary

"All really great. The combination of the notes, map and guidebook gives the walker a very good sense of the route, highlights, any diversions and any transport (ferries and buses) that might be needed. I especially like that you make a note of archaeological, historical and other sites of interest to keep a look-out for. "

Luggage transfers

"All went very smoothly. "

Accommodation

"Generally really very good. I especially liked the Castle Inn at Lulworth. The new manager, Ian, and his partner plus staff were really welcoming. The Redcliff Guest House was very nice too - a very old-school classic seaside B&B with lovely hosts. My one piece of feedback concerns the Ilchester Arms in Abbotsbury. It feels like it is really on its last legs in terms management and organisation. I'm not terribly fussy about these things, but various things seemed to be going wrong - missed dinner reservation, no hot water in the bathrooms, etc. The staff were trying to manage as best as they could, but you might just need to keep an eye on this option for future bookings. "

Overall experience

"Truly a magnificent walk and a memory I'll treasure for years to come. I've now completed the SWCP thanks very much to your excellent service and support."

Planning and booking for your walk with Encounter Walking Holidays

"Very good and flexible. Together with Encounter Walking Holidays we could plan our holiday just the way we liked. They are very flexible. In our case we asked for some changes in accomodations and brought in some suggestions. They gave us advice in which accomodations they could work with and which they would not advise us to go to."

Encounter Walking Holidays Website

"Website is very good. Lot of information , complete and clear."

Your Walking Routes

"On a 20 leg (400 km) part of the SWCP we could see that different parts of the Path are maintained not so well as other parts. Sometimes signes are missing, or broken while on other locations they are new and made out of fancy materials. Also the tracks are sometimes difficult to walk because plants are growing over it while on other plants are nicely removed."

Walking notes, maps, guidebooks and itinerary

"We used our own navigation. Walking notes we got from Encounter Walking Holidays are very good, We always checked them the night before to see what we could expect the next day. Which parts of the track are easy, moderate or strenuous and a lot of sightseeing topics."

Luggage transfers

"Luggage transfer never went wrong. One time however we found a note on our luggage. That day we waited for the rain to clear and left after 9 o'clock . We did not realize that we should have put our luggage at the pick-up point before 9 o'clock. They people from the luggage transfer service did pick it up later. Thank you !"

Accommodation

"Some of the locations we picked ourselfes where maybe not the best choices after all. We had one room in the attic where we had to stoop constantly to avoid bumping our heads. Our choice and our mistake. But 95% were very good. Very friendly, with good breakfast, when available."

Overall experience

"Very good overall. This was our second time with Encounter Walking Holidays. We will probably travel with them in the future."

"We were very lucky to be so perfectly guided by the expert team of Encounter Walking Holidays. From the beginning in 2015 until the finish in 2023 they drafted, planned and organized our walks on the SWCP and provided us with professional advice. We highly recommend them to anyone who’d like to enjoy a smooth and carefree walking holiday in the UK, especially when from abroad. Rumor has it, there is a new Cornwall circular walk (Tamara Coast to Coast), which is very tempting to us ????. A very big THANK YOU to the team of Encounter Walking Holidays, we couldn’t have done it without you."

Your Walking Routes

"On our walk from Abbotsbury to Fortuneswell (Portland) just after the Army Training Centre and about a 3/4 mile before the Ferry Bridge the path was closed and there was no signposted diversion and so we had to walk in the sea bed to avoid a detour. Luckily the tide was out but don't ask about our walking boots - wellies would have been a better choice ... On the whole there are lots of steep ascents and descents and so many steps on the route from Exmouth to Poole. We did the part Lulworth Cove to Poole in two days, we'd recommend to split the milage up in three walking days. "

Overall experience

"We started back in June 2015 with the section Padstow to Penzance, but we got only as far as St. Just due to a strained muscle. Back on the SWCP in June 2016 we covered Marazion to Fowey and finally in June 2017 we set off from the actual starting point of the SWCP in Minehead and walked as far as Padstow. In June 2018 we walked the Fowey to Exmouth stretch as well as St. Just to Penzance, which we missed out in 2015. Due to various circumstances, we only got back on the Path five years later in June this year and finally finished the 630 miles South West Coast Path covering the Exmouth to Poole segment on 26th of June – WE DID IT! Every part has its own unique features, sometimes more and sometimes less demanding and even some tedious and dull bits, but it’s so rewarding at the same time. The wildlife, the flora, the ever-changing landscape, the beaches, lonesome coves and charming villages, so many steep climbs and descents, and never-ending steps, the path at parts overgrown with stinging nettles, gorse and brambles – I’m not complaining - and especially the sea, all of this is the unique and wonderful South West Coast Path. In Austria we have high and steep mountains, lovely lakes and beautiful landscape but no sea and therefore no coast to walk along. To us it was an amazing experience and the last bit was quite challenging too after the long pause of 4 years, but we managed well in the end and that’s the main thing. "

"We are 77 and 75 years old, and our advice is GO! We have so many incredible life long memories. Once you start walking, despite some very minor challenges, you may become addicted.! There is an incredible feeling of accomplishment and enjoyment. Over the years, we met our goal of completing the SW Coastal, and so missed the walking that we returned recently to again walk the SW Path between Teignmouth and Plymouth. Some long days, but breath taking scenery with several lovely pubs, interesting hikers who are also completing the path, friendly dogs, beautiful gardens, National Trust sites, and lovely and welcoming B and B accommodations along the path. Encounters is spot on in providing walks geared to your interests and choices. Whether it is a short walk or the completion of the entire 640 mile SW Coastal Path, it is a journey of a life time. Thank you, Encounters. "

"Overall the accommodation was of a very high standard and we appreciated the opportunity to choose from three different options and then to upgrade within those options. "They are always lovely and serviceminded. We decided to spilt a longer walk in two, from Portloe to Mevagissey and stayed overnight at the lovely Llawnrock hotel in Gorran Haven before walking to Mevagissey next day. And they found us a very good place to stay."

Encounter Walking Holidays Website

"Very easy to navigate and a lot of useful information."

Your Walking Routes

"We found the stretch from Portloe to Gorran Haven to be quite strenuous most of the way, though the description on the pdf was "Around 9 miles (14.5 km) - Moderate walking grade, 2 miles (3.2 km) Strenuous". But the stretch from Mevagissey to Charlestown described as "Around 8 miles (12.9 km) - Strenuous", felt less strenuous than Portloe to Gorran Haven in spite of some really long and steep climbs and descents. Not easy but it felt more moderate than Portloe to Gorran Haven, perhaps also because of a bit easier surface...? But this is probably personal preferences. We measured just above 600 metres of total ascent on each of these. Else, everything perfectly described and very detailed. But we tend to measure our walks somewhat longer than what is said in the description."

Walking notes, maps, guidebooks and itinerary

"Itinerary very suitable for us: Falmouth (to Place with the ferry) to Portscatho Portscatho to Portloe Portloe to Gorran Haven Gorran Haven to Mevagissey Rest day in Mevagissey with a trip to the ost Gardens of Heligan Mevagissey to Charlestown Rest day in Charlestown with a visit to Eden Project The buses were less than reliable and some were cancelled, so we chose to walk to and from The lost gardens of Heligan, and took a taxi both ways to and from Eden Project. We had good and warm weather. Bring enough water and electrolytes. There is not always somewhere to fill up the water bottles. I have the Refill app, but the mobile reception is not at all reliable so the app was quite useless. On one warm and strenuous day I drank over 3 litres of water and one can of Fanta. The Trailblazer guidebooks are a must for us. They are interesting, full of details you never find in other mapbooks, and very clear."

Luggage transfers

"Worked to perfection like always. This is our 5th walking holiday along the SWCP using Encounter Walking Holidays and there has never been a problem. We are travelling from Norway."

Accommodation

"All accommodations were good. Friendly and helpful staff everywhere. Linen and beds really great, all places were immacculately clean and really lovely decorated. We had good and deliciously made breakfast choices every day. We had dinner at some of the places we stayed: The Plume of Feathers in Portscatho, The Llawnrock hotel in Gorran Haven and The Rasleigh Arms in Charlestown and we are totally satisfied with the choices and the service and the food."

Overall experience

"A great walking holiday as usual with only good and no bad experiences. Great views and good weather, 20-22 degrees, and the many encounters with cows, bullocks, ponies, sheep, kestrels etc went really well :-) There are some places where there is not good enough signposting, but I had already made GPX tracks on Komoot app so we knew where to go. I recommend Encounter Walking Holidays to everyone who might be slightly interested in doing these walks. "

"Gillian Creek Crossing. You can ford up to an hour and a half after low tide...just above knees at that point. If you are short you'll get wet up to mid-thigh. When you get to Helford, it is tempting to sit at the Shipwright arms to enjoy the beautiful setting and rest over a pint or two, but be careful - you might miss the last ferry across (which was sort of 4ish the day we crossed). Ask the bartender when the last ferry leaves. "

Walking notes, maps, guidebooks and itinerary

"Highly detailed itineraries - bespoke to our walk. Ferry info and tide times super important when walking south Cornwall - and they provide everything you need to know. The map they provide is essential kit - phone batteries die and or connection can be sketchy in some places. "

Luggage transfers

"Very smooth operation. Never had one hitch or problem. "

Accommodation

"Beware staying in the centre of Falmouth and Fowey - if you want an early night. Both the Chain Locker (Falmouth) and The King of Prussia (Fowey) are ground zero for partying/live music. We happened upon Falmouth on the last day of the Sea Shanty Festival (which was manic - but very jolly!) Hats off to the Caerthillian Guest House in the Lizard. Austin and Linda run a lovely guest house. Basic en-suite rooms but spotlessly clean and comfy - with every detail thought through - down to extra plug sockets by the bed for charging devices. Many a fancy hotel could learn a thing or two from Austin and Linda. "

Your Walking Routes

"Don't underestimate the toughness of some sections, acknowledging of course that this is age and fitness dependent! I've undertaken many treks worldwide since retirement but the early stages in particular of the SWCP were some of the toughest I've ever undertaken, not helped by the unseasonably hot weather in June this year."

Walking notes, maps, guidebooks and itinerary

"All found to be very useful but I would have to say that the Trailblazer books could contain more useful information where the path is sometimes difficult to find e.g. the alternative path out of Port Isaac lacked signage along the way and was impossible to follow, likewise their sketched maps seemed to miss out a number of landmarks which if noted would have been reassuring as to correct route and location reached."

Luggage transfers

"Brilliant!! all 20 transfers without a hitch. My only "complaint" was the 9 o'clock deadline for leaving the bag ready for collection which did not always correspond with hotel breakfast times and being able to be ready in time."

Accommodation

"All very good although I did opt for the upgrades at booking time. My main concern was the breakfast serving times which were usually from 8 or 8.30am, one was from 9 am, which prevented an early start. It also meant that the bag had to be packed and ready before breakfast which wasn't always convenient."

Overall experience

"Most enjoyable but very challenging and would recommend that trekkers consider very carefully the distances and investigate the terrain and gradients in detail before confirming each day's itinerary. That way you'll have time to appreciate the sights and sounds along the way more!!"
