Plymouth - Path Detour

March 3rd 2010

2nd March 2010: Path closure Plymouth--Jennycliff

A landslip across the Coast Path in the woodlands south of the open area at Jennycliff has caused Plymouth City Council to close the path. Walkers should proceed, north and south, onto the road. Care should be taken as this road can be busy at times.

Robin Pearce, of Plymouth City Council, tells us diversion signs will be erected and he hopes the Coast Path can be reinstated within four weeks.

From the South West Coast Path Association.

Hartland - Coast Path Diversion (Temporary)

January 21st 2010

Hartland - North Devon section from Clovelly to Hartland Quay

Following a cliff fall near the Radar Station just east of Hartland Point car park, the Coast Path has had to be diverted inland for about 1/2 mile. The diversion route runs along the road as far as East Titchberry Farm to rejoin the coast above Shipload Bay. It is hoped that this diversion will only be temporary, and the Coast Path can be reinstated shortly

Monster Jaws Found on the Coast Path !

December 19th 2009

The fossilised skull of a pliosaur, the largest marine reptile that ever lived, has been found along the South West Coast Path in the Jurassic Coast section at Weymouth Bay

According to the areas tourist website  www.jurassiccoast.com experts believe the head - measuring more than two metres long - contains the biggest jaws ever found in Britain, and possibly the world.

The monster find has been secured with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, plus Dorset and Devon county councils, and will be prepared for permanent display at the Dorset County Museum in Dorchester.

This pliosaur lived in the Jurassic seas that covered Dorset 155 million years ago and was at least 12 metres long. The jaws were powerful enough to bite a small car in half.

In 2006 a pliosaur skeleton was discovered at Svalbard in northern Norway, but the skull was missing. And initial investigations indicate that the Weymouth Bay skull belonged to an even bigger animal.

For more information about this fascinating area see www.jurassiccoast.com. For information about South West Coast Path Walking along the Dorset coast CLICK HERE

Path Closure (Temporary ?) North Somerset

December 19th 2009

We have been advised that the South West Coast Path has been temporarily closed near Yenworthy in North Somerset because of recent landslips and the danger of more during the winter. The current 21 day closure will be extended by a further 21 days over the Christmas period. Further updates will follow.

Meanwhile anyone planning to walk between Porlock and Lynmouth (Day 2 of the Minehead to Westward Ho Section) should print off the map showing the alternative route though we have been told it is signposted on the ground.
